After being on the program for two months I’ve been able to trim the fat while maintaining my lean body mass, which seems to be “impossible” for other weight loss methods. I’m still working my way down into a healthy body fat percentage, but if this rate continues I’ll be there well before the 6 month maximum that Kiefer suggests. The book is an easy read and refreshingly blunt with regards to how other diets fail to work, while presenting solid evidence to support his view. Even if you’re not dieting it provides a good explanation about how differently the body processes carbohydrates, fat, and protein. The first 150 pages or so describe the system, and the remaining majority of the book consists of recipes, meal plans, and snack ideas that compliment the ultra-low-carb diet. — edit: 2011/10/26 — I was directly approached to provide continuing feedback on my success with the diet, so here are my current thoughts: I’m not one to usually be overly hyperbolic, but discovery and implementation of the Carb Nite solution is quite possibly the most important thing I’ve ever done. I went from around 32% body fat percentage to 18% within the recommended 6 month period. I’m now on my second cycle and am on track to be under 15% by year’s end. I’ve also had several friends and family members use the protocol with tremendous results as well. I’m in better shape now in my early thirties than I ever was in my twenties, as it’s set me on a good healthy body path. It does require tremendous discipline, but I regard that as a strength of the diet – it’s easy not to cheat whenever you know the consequences are a full 10-day reset of your diet cycle, and the built-in weekly “cheat” can be used to eat whatever you desire. The e-book version is available for purchase directly from the website as well – […]

First of all a little background on me I have tried low carb diets in the past, some have worked a little then I would stall out and stop while others were easier to maintain but just reintroduced carbs and then I would stall. I stepped on a scale recently and was not happy with what I saw. I decided to go on the Carb Nite solution at the advise of a friend because he was on it and was happy with the results. I’ve only been on the diet since end of November 2012, the Monday after turkey day as a matter of fact. So far I have lost an astonishing 52lbs, when I started I tipped the scales at 346 lbs and as of this writing I weigh 294lbs. The first few days of ULC diets are pretty rough but so far I feel better than I have in a very long time and I have more energy as well. I don’t work out but I do have a job that keeps me an the go quite a bit, however I would like to start working out to build some lean muscle and help my body burn more fat. I stopped drinking alcohol and don’t drink any diet sodas or have any artificial sweeteners, I stay away from anything processed and try to follow the book to the letter. I have also started taking vitamins and supplements along with the diet. Following the books advice I don’t eat in the mornings usually for about 10-12 hours after my last meal. Instead I have a cup of coffee with some heavy cream, coconut oil and a tablespoon of almond nut butter. That tends to stave off any hunger pains and keep me mentally sharp as well as my fat burning going. The diet has been fantastic it one of the easiest and most satisfying ones I have ever tried. The book goes into detail about why you should do certain things and why you shouldn’t so it makes it easier to understand and stick with. After having so much success with this diet and feeling better overall I recommend it to everyone I know most of my family and quite a few friends are now on it because they want lose weight or get into better shape and are having great results. If anyone is a naysayer I have before and during pics as well as weight and inches updates through an android app weight loss tracker. My updates have also been linked on Keifers website, google+ and facebook for my weight loss and results. Bottom line is this diet is the best thing I have tried IMHO it is easy to follow, understand and maintain. It has made me addicted to losing weight and getting healthier, I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to try it out!

John Kiefer’s Carb Nite Solution was one of the most informative nutrition related books I’ve read and the only one I can recall that includes an entire chapter of citations backing up the text. Using ultra low carb intake plus a weekly carb infusion to kick start the metabolism may be just the key for many who have been unsuccessful with managing bodyweight in the past. The book is full of science that explains the relationship between food, hormones and energy expenditure and how that impacts keeping or shedding body fat. The author does a good job of keeping the density of scientific text low thus making the information accessible to the non-scientific reader. The section that deals with the fallacies of other plans – South Beach, Zone, Atkins, and others – using the science to demonstrate why those other methods don’t work and actually sabotage the goal of healthy weight loss, systemically confronts arguments for alternate diet plans. This is not a diet plan for life, and Mr. Kiefer notes that one should take a break and not implement this diet for longer than 6 months at a time. Anyone with a history of eating disorder would be advised to approach the plan with caution – while the author instructs readers to approach Carb Nite – the weekly infusion of carbs back into the diet – with reasonable consideration that spreads the intake over 6 – 8 hours and includes eating to satiety not oversaturation, someone with a eating disorder history could take this as permission to binge thus aggravating that condition. For the rest of the population without such a history, this should not be an issue. Taking on Carb Nite takes planning, and the author has included some tantalizing food plans and recipes. John Kiefer has provided a scientifically based approach to body fat loss that harnesses the body’s hormones and restarts the metabolism. This is an excellent book if you want not a fad but a fact based approach to weight loss. |
