In the process, she becomes not just healthier but happier–a shift that impacts every facet of her life.
For anyone who has struggled to make a big life change, The Shift offers valuable lessons and inspiration for taking charge once and for all.

I hesitate to write negative reviews of books. This one, though, was not only disappointing, but unhealthy. I spent the first few chapters waiting for Tory to “shift” into healthy eating. And I kept reading, and reading and reading more about NOT eating…becoming a pro at moving things around on a plate…avoiding food at parties…cutting out lots of foods entirely, including fruit…only eating vegetables with no carbs. In one section of the book Tory recalls when she told her own 14-year-old daughter that she would feel more comfortable if she lost 5 pounds! Talk about starting body image issues early! Let’s not even go into the sex chapter (NOT what I wanted to read). This book is about avoiding food, not moderation. Two quotes, “I can no longer think that “just one” cupcake, piece of bread, or potato chip is acceptable…” and “consciously NOT EATING is new and exciting.” Books like these just set people up for failure, unless you’re on TV and know that you can get a book deal and lots of press coverage.

I did give this book a 3 star just because I think that her story of struggle and how she continued to have will power was very positive. Otherwise I would give this book a 1 star. I am a nurse and health educator. Tory basically did the Atkins diet with 25 grams of carbs per day. She didn’t do this for just a few weeks but for months. She even talks about how she used ketone urine test strips every day and if the result was a purple, she knew she was burning fat the way she wanted. Not that many of you will want the physiology lesson here, but it is important to realize just how dangerous this is. The cells in our bodies require glucose to function. It is estimated that we need at least 100 grams of glucose per day just for our brains to function properly. When we don’t get glucose from the food we eat, then our body breaks down fat and turns that into glucose. However, the by-product (waste) of turning fat to glucose is fatty acid. Fatty acid becomes ketones in our blood stream, and then our kidneys must work extra, extra hard to try to get rid of the ketones. The body can handle a few ketones, but when ketones are high enough to cause a test strip to be purple, then that indicates major metabolic acidosis and this can cause kidney failure or a coma. It is more important to be healthy than to measure health as a size 6. I would have rather read that she got to a size 8 or 10 by eating a balanced healthy diet, than the size 4 by only eating protein and kale.

This was an easy and fast read. I liked that Tory was very honest about the process and what it took. There is this idea that if you just “eat less and move more” that you can be thin. Obviously this works for some people but for the vast majority of overweight people, especially women of a certain age, it takes extreme deprivation. Also, when you are trying to lose weight, your body will fight it and put out hormones that make you obsessed with food (not everyone, but in general) and you will be thinking about food and having to fight your biological urges to eat constantly. I get so very sick of the “lose weight easily and without cravings” crap that you see and hear everywhere. I loved that she showed the truth about the process. I could also relate to the difficulties of dealing with those who try to sabotage, the people who nag “just one bite”. Why? WHY do people do that when they could be being supportive instead? Some of us can’t do “just one bite” as she explained. For some of us, certain foods do trigger an addictive response and to say “one bite won’t hurt you” is wrong and extremely insensitive. It is like telling an alcoholic to have “just” one drink. I did NOT however like that she told her daughter to lose 5 pounds!! Her daughter was ‘not stick thin’. That doesn’t mean she was overweight and she was still a growing girl. Her focus should be on healthful eating and physical activity, not trying to lose a few pounds! I disagree with her mother that losing 5 pounds would make her daughter feel more confident because research and real life has shown us that it is more likely to lead to a life long battle with her body and self confidence issues. |
