– Sakuni Graha is explained to be the goddess who moves in the sky, adorned with ornaments, has an ‘iron face’ – black in colour and possesses sharp beak, brown eyes, big body, terrifying voice, drooping abdomen and hooklike ears.
The 30th chapter of Uttaratantra of Sushruta Samhita is named as Sakuniraha Pratişedha Adhyaya. This chapter deals with the Treatment of Sakunigraha.
अथातः शकुनीप्रतिषेधं व्याख्यास्यामः ॥१॥
यथोवाच भगवान् धन्वन्तरिः ॥
We will now expound Sakunigraha pratisedha- treatment of child seized by Sakunigraha; as revealed by the venerable Dhanvantari.
Parisecana, Abhyanga, Pradeha
शुकुन्यभिपरीतस्य कार्यो वैद्येन जानता॥
वएतसाम्रकपित्थानां निष्काथः परिषेचने ॥३॥
कषायमधुरैस्तैलं कार्यमभ्यञ्जने शिशोः ॥४॥
मधुकोशीरह्रीबेरसारिवोत्पलपद्मकैः|
रोद्रप्रियङ्गुमञ्जिष्ठागैरिकैः प्रदिहेच्छिशुम् ॥५॥
Parisecana – The physician should first determine that the child has been seized by Sakuni Graha. Following this, he should bathe the child with decoction of Vetasa, Amra and Kapittha.
Abhyanga – The physician should anoint / give massages to the child with the oil prepared with herbs predominantly of astringent and sweet taste.
Pradeha – Warm poultice prepared with the below mentioned herbs should be applied on the body of the child afflicted by Sakuni Graha –
– Madhuka,
– Usira,
– Hribera,
– Sariva,
– Utpala,
– Padmaka,
– Rodhara,
– Priyangu,
– Manjistha, and
– Gairika
Curna, Dhupana, Dharana
व्रणेषूक्तानि चूर्णानि पथ्यानि विविधानि च ॥६॥
स्कन्दग्रहे धूपनानि तानीहापि प्रयोजयेत् ॥७॥
शतावरीमृगैर्वारुनागदन्तीनिदिग्धिकाः ॥
लक्ष्मणां सहदेवां च बृहतीं चापि धारयेत् ॥८॥
Curna – Vranokta Curna i.e. powders prepared using different herbs in the context of treatment of vrana – wounds should be used in children afflicted with Sakuni Graha also.
Dhupana – The herbs used for providing fumigation to the children suffering from Skanda Graha should also be used for giving fumigation to the children afflicted with Sakuni Graha.
Dharana – Amulets prepared from the below mentioned herbs should be worn on the body (of the child afflicted by Sakuni Graha) –
– Satavari,
– Mrgairvaru,
– Nagadanti,
– Nidigdhika,
– Laksmana,
– Sahadeva, and
– Brhati
तिलतण्डुलकं माल्यं हरितालं मनःशिला।
बलिरेष करंजेषु निवेध्यो नियतात्मना॥९॥
Bali Karma – The below mentioned ingredients should be kept at the roots (bottom) of Karanja Tree at night time towards oblation to Sakuni Graha, by the person who is self-controlled and after having purified himself by bathing and other rituals –
– Tila
– Tandula (or tila-tandula)
– Mala – garland
– Haratala
– Manashila
Other remedies for affliction of Sakuni Graha
निष्कुटे च प्रयोक्तव्यं स्नानमस्य यथाविधि ॥१०॥
स्कन्दापस्माशमनं घृतं चापीह पूजितम् ॥
कुर्याच्च विविधां पूजां शकुन्याः कुसुमैः शुभैः ॥११॥
अन्तरीक्षचरा देवा सर्वालङ्कारभूषिता॥
अयोमुखी तीक्ष्णतुण्डा शकुनी ते प्रसीदतु ॥१२॥
दुर्दर्शना महाकाया पिङाक्षी भैरवस्वरा ॥
लम्बोदरी शङ्कुकर्णी शकुनी ते प्रसीदतु ॥१३॥
The child should be given a bath in a forest or house garden according to the procedure.
The medicated ghee described for pacification of Skandapasmara Graha shall be used for pacifying Sakuni Graha also. It is best suited for diseases and symptoms caused by the mentioned graha.
The Sakuni graha should be worshipped using many types of auspicious flowers.
Prayers towards Sakuni Graha should be offered as – ‘Sakuni, you are the goddess who is moving in the sky. You are adorned with all kinds of ornaments. You have the face of iron which is black in colour and possesses a sharp beak. Oh Goddess, with an unpleasant appearance, big sized body, brown eyes, terrifying voice, dropping abdomen and hook-like ears, become pleased.’
इति श्रीसुश्रुतसंहितायामुत्तरतन्त्रान्तन्तर्गते कुमारतन्त्रे शकुनीप्रतिषेधो नाम (चतुर्थोऽध्यायः, आदितः) त्र्ंशोऽध्यायः ॥३०॥
Thus ends the Thirteenth chapter by name Sakunigraha Pratisedha in Uttara Sthana of Susruta Samhita.
