Sushruta Samhita Uttaratantra Chapter 34 Sitaputanā Graha Pratişedha (Treatment of Sitaputanā Graha)

        Acharya Sushruta has explained the treatment of Sitaputana Graha in Chapter 34 of Uttara Tantra

        For Parisechana – Kapitthadi Sadhita Jala (Kapitta, Suvaha, Bimbi, Bilva, Prachibala, Nandi and Bhallataka)

        For Abhyanga – Bastamutradi Taila (Bastamutra, Gomutra, Musta, Suradaru, Kustha and Sarvagandha)

        For Ghrta (panartha, lehartha) – Rohinyadi Ghrta (Ghee prepared with Decoction of Rohini twak, Sarja, Khadira, Palasa and Kakubha along with milk and ghee).

        For Dhupana – Gridhroluka Purishadi (Gridhra purisha, Uluka purisha, Badtagandha, Sarpa nirmoka, Nimba patra and Madhuka patra).

        For Dharana – Lamba, Gunja and Kakadani

        For Bali – Rice cooked with mudga, varuni and rakta (blood of animals). She should be offered with green gram as food, sura – beer, sonita – blood and reservoirs of water – ponds, rivers, lakes etc.

        For Snana – baths should be given on the banks of ponds (jalashaya).

The 33rd chapter of Uttaratantra of Sushruta Samhita is named as Sitaputanā Graha Pratişedha Adhyaya. This chapter deals with the Treatment of Sitaputanā Graha.  

अथातः शीतपूतनाप्रतिषेधं व्याख्यास्यामः ||१||
यथोवाच भगवान् धन्वन्तरिः ||२||

We will now expound Sitaputana graha pratiṣedha – treatment of the child seized by Śītaputanā; as revealed by the venerable Dhañvañtari.

Parisechana, Taila, Ghrta, Dhupana, Dharana

कपित्थं सुवहां बिम्बीं तथा बिल्वं प्रचीबलम् |
नन्दीं भल्लातकं चापि परिषेके प्रयोजयेत् ||३||
बस्तमूत्रं गवां मूत्रं मुस्तं च सुरदारु च |
कुष्ठं च सर्वगन्धांश्च तैलार्थमवचारयेत् ||४||
रोहिणीसर्जखदिरपलाशककुभत्वचः |
निष्क्वाथ्य तस्मिन्निष्क्वाथे सक्षीरं विपचेद्घृतम् ||५||
गृध्रोलूकपुरीषाणि बस्तगन्धामहेस्त्वचः |
निम्बपत्राणि मधुकं धूपनार्थं प्रयोजयेत् ||६||
धारयेदपि लम्बां च गुञ्जां काकादनीं तथा |७|

Parisecana – Water prepared with the below mentioned is used for bathing the child afflicted with Sitaputana Graha –

        Kapittha,

        Suvahā,

        Bimbi,

        Bilva,

        Prācībala,

        Nañdi and

        Bhallātaka

Taila – Oil for anointing / massaging the child afflicted with Sitaputana Graha should be prepared with the below mentioned ingredients –

        Urine of goat and cow,

        Musta,

        Suradāru,

        Kuṣṭha and

        Sarvagandha

Ghrta – Medicated ghee is cooked with the decoction of the below mentioned herbs along with milk and ghee –

        Bark of Rohiņī,

        Sarja,

        Khadira,

        Palāśa and

        Kakubha

This ghee should be given for drinking / licking.

Dhupana – Fumigation should be given by the fumes of the below mentioned ingredients –

        Excreta of eagle and owl

        Bastagandha

        Peel of snake

        Leaves of Nimba and Madhuka

Dharana – Amulets of Lambā, Guñjā and Kākādanī should be tied on the body of the child.  

नद्यां मुद्गकृतैश्चान्नैस्तर्पयेच्छीतपूतनाम् ||७||
देव्यै देयश्चोपहारो वारुणी रुधिरं तथा |
जलाशयान्ते बालस्य स्नपनं चोपदिश्यते ||८||
मुद्गौदनाशना देवी सुराशोणितपायिनी |
जलाशयालया देवी पातु त्वां शीतपूतना ||९||

Bali – Oblation to please goddess Sitaputana should be given with rice cooked with mudga – green gram, Varuni – wine and blood of animals. 

Snana and Puja – Bathing should be given to the child on the banks of a pond. Later, prayer should be offered to Goddess Sitaputana as – ‘Goddess Sitaputana, please take the offering of rice cooked with green gram as food for consumption, sura – beer, sonita – blood and reservoirs of water – ponds, rivers, lakes etc for drinking and be pleased to protect the child’.

इति श्रीसु  श्रुतसंहितायामुत्तरतन्त्रान्तर्गते कुमारतन्त्रे  शीतपूतनाप्रतिषेधो नाम  (अष्टमोऽध्यायः आदीतः) चतुस्रिंशोऽध्यायः  ॥३४॥

Thus ends the thirty-forth chapter by name Sitaputana Pratisedha in  Uttara Sthana of Susruta samhita.
