The 8th chapter of Uttaratantra of Sushruta Samhita is named as Cikistsita Pravibhga Vijnaniya Adhyaya. This chapter deals with Kinds of Treatment.
अथातश्चिकित्सितप्रविभागविज्ञानीयमध्यायं व्याख्यास्यामः ||१||
यथोवाच भगवान् धन्वन्तरिः (सुश्रुताय) ||२||
We will now expound the chapter by name Cikisita pravibhaga Vijnaniya i.e. knowledge of classifications of treatment (of eye diseases) as revealed by the venerable Dhanantari.
षट्सप्ततिर्येऽभिहिता व्याधयो नामलक्षणैः |
चिकित्सितमिदं तेषां समासव्यासतः शृणु ||३||
The master tells ‘Now, we shall explain briefly and also elaborate treatment for the seventy-six diseases described by their name and number. Listen to the same attentively.’

छेद्यास्तेषु दशैकश्च नव लेख्याः प्रकीर्तिताः |
भेद्याः पञ्च विकाराः स्युर्व्यध्याः पञ्चदशैव तु ||४||
द्वादशाऽशस्त्रकृत्याश्च याप्याः सप्त भवन्ति हि |
रोगा वर्जयितव्याः स्युर्दश पञ्च च जानता |
असाध्यौ वा भवेतां तु याप्यौ चागन्तुसञ्ज्ञितौ ||५||
Depending on the mode of treatment / surgical procedure used in treating these conditions and prognosis of diseases, the seventy-six eye diseases can be classified as below mentioned

| Agantuja, Bahya Nimittaja – diseases caused due to exogenous causes | 2 |
Those diseases which are agantuja i.e. exogenous are considered as Yapya.
Chedya
अर्शोऽन्वितं भवति वर्त्म तु यत्तथाऽर्शः शुष्कं तथाऽर्बुदमथो पिडकाः सिराजाः |
जालं सिराजमपि पञ्चविधं तथाऽर्म छेद्या भवन्ति सह पर्वणिकामयेन ||६||
Below mentioned are eleven diseases which are chedya i.e. treatable by excision, cutting or removing –

– Suska Arsas – 1
– Varmta Arbuda – 1
– Siraja Pidaka – 1
– Sira Jala – 1
– Arma – 5 types
– Parvanika – 1
Lekhya
उत्साङ्गिनी बहलकर्दमवर्त्मनी च श्यावं च यच्च पठितं त्विह बद्धवर्त्म |
च पोथकियुतं खलु यच्च वर्त्म कुम्भीकिनी च सह शर्करया च लेख्याः ||७||
Below mentioned are the nine diseases which are lekhya i.e. curable by scraping –
– Utsangini – 1
– Bahala Vartma – 1
– Kardama Vartma – 1
– Syava Vartma – 1
– Baddha Vartma / Vartma Bandhaka – 1
– Klista Vartma – 1
– Pothaki – 1
– Kumbhikini – 1
– Vartma Sarkara – 1
Bhedya
श्लेष्मोपनाहलगणौ च बिसं च भेद्या ग्रन्थिश्च यः कृमिकृतोऽञ्जननामिका च |८|
Below mentioned are the five diseases which are bhedya i.e. curable by incising –
– Slesmopananaha – 1
– Lagana – 1
– Bisavartma – 1
– Krimi Granthi – 1
– Anjananamika – 1
Vedhya
आदौ सिरा निगदितास्तु ययोः प्रयोगे पाकौ च यौ नयनयोः पवनोऽन्यतश्च ||८||
पूयालसानिलविपर्ययमन्थसञ्ज्ञाः स्यन्दास्तु यान्त्युपशमं हि सिराव्यधेन |
Below mentioned are the fifteen diseases which are Vedhya i.e. curable by puncturing –
– Sira nigaditani – two diseases indicated by the term sira i.e. Sirotpata and Siraharsa – 2
– Paka – 2
– Anyatovata – 1
– Puyalasa – 1
– Vataviparyaya – 1
– Adhimantha – 4
– Abhisyanda – 4
These fifteen vedhya diseases of the eye will subside or get cured by puncturing those veins indicated earlier in chapter 8 of Sushruta Samhita Sarira Sthana section.
Asastra Krta
शुष्काक्षिपाककफपित्तविदग्धदृष्टिष्वम्लाख्यशुक्रसहितार्जुनपिष्टकेषु ||९||
अक्लिन्नवर्त्महुतभुग्ध्वजदर्शिशुक्तिप्रक्लिन्नवर्त्मसु तथैव बलाससञ्ज्ञे |
आगन्तुनाऽऽमययुगेन च दूषितायां दृष्टौ न शस्त्रपतनं प्रवदन्ति तज्ज्ञाः ||१०||
Below mentioned are the twelve diseases along with two exogenous diseases in which the eye specialists do not advocate the use of shastra (i.e. surgical instruments should not be used in these conditions) –

Yapya
सम्पश्यतः षडपि येऽभिहितास्तु काचास्ते पक्ष्मकोपसहितास्तु भवन्ति याप्याः |११|
Below mentioned are the seven diseases which are Yapya – controllable / manageable, but not completely curable –
– Kaca – 6 types
– Paksmakopa – 1
Asadhya and Varjya
चत्वार एव पवनप्रभवास्त्वसाध्या द्वौ पित्तजौ कफनिमित्तज एक एव |
अष्टार्धका रुधिरजाश्च गदास्त्रिदोषास्तावन्त एव गदितावपि बाह्यजौ द्वौ ||११||
Below mentioned are the fifteen diseases along with two bahyaja which are sadhya – incurable or varjya – rejectable –
– Diseases caused by aggravated vata by name Hatadhimantha, Nimesa, Gambhirika Drsti and Vatahata Vartma – 4
– Diseases caused by aggravated pitta by names Hrsvajadya and Jalasrava – 2
– Disease caused by aggravated kapha by name Kaphasrava – 1
– Diseases caused by aggravated rudira / rakta i.e. blood by names Raktasrava, Ajakajata, Sonitarsa, Savrana Sukra – 4
– Diseases born from aggravated tridosas by names Puyasrava, Nakulandya, Aksipakatyaya and Alaji – 4
– Diseases which are bahyaja i.e. nimittaja and animittaja drstihani – 2
इति सुश्रुतसंहितायामुत्तरतन्त्रान्तर्गते शालाक्यतन्त्रे चिकित्सितप्रविभागविज्ञानीयो नामाष्टमोऽध्यायः ||८||
Thus ends the eighth chapter by name Cikitsita Praibhagiya in Uttara Sthna of Susruta Samhita.
