The 27th chapter of Uttaratantra of Sushruta Samhita is named as Navagrahakrti Vijnaniya Adhyaya. This chapter deals with the Knowledge of Navagrahas.
अथातोनासागतरोगविज्ञानीयमध्यावंव्याख्यास्यामः।।१।।
यथोवाचभगवान्धन्वन्तरि।।२।।
We will now expound the chapter by name Navagraha Akrti Vijananiya -Knowledge of features of Navagraha (nine evil- spirits which seize children) as revealed by the venerable Dhanvantari.
बालग्रहाणांविज्ञानंसाधनंचाप्यनन्तरम्।।
उत्पत्तिंकारणंचैवसुश्रुतैकमनाःशृणु।।३।।
The knowledge about Balagrahas i.e. evil spirits seizing the children, their genesis (origin) and management (treatment of children seized by grahas) shall now be enumerated. Now listen attentively to the same dear Sushruta!

Graha Nama – sankhya – names and number of Grahas
स्कन्दग्रहस्तुप्रथमःस्कन्दापस्मारएवच।।
शकुनीरेवतीचैवपूतनाचान्धपूतना।।४।।
पूतनाशीतनामाचतथैवमुखमण्डिका।।
नवमोनैगमेषश्चयःपितृग्रहसंज्ञितः ||५||
The names of the nine grahas are as mentioned below –
– Skanda Graha,
– Skandapasmara,
– Sakuni,
– Revati,
– Putana,
– Andhaputana,
– Sitaputana,
– Mukhamandika and
– Naigamesa or Pitragraha
Grahana Karana – Cause for seizing children
धात्रीमात्रोप्राक्प्रदिष्टापचाराच्छौचभ्रष्टान्मङ्गलाचारहीनान्।।
त्रस्तान्हृष्टांस्तर्जितान्ताडितान्वापूजाहेतोर्हिस्युरेतेकुमारान्।।६।।
Causes –
– Indulgence of dhatri – wet-nurse and Matru – mother in improper conduct in relation to the foods and activities as previously described in Sarira Sthana section – chapters 2 & 10
– Negligence towards maintenance of cleanliness,
– Negligence in performing auspicious rites
How do Grahas affect? – Due to the influence of the above said causative factors, the grahas i.e. evil spirits desiring worship would cause harm to the children when children are either agitated, overjoyed, frightened or being beaten.
ऐश्वर्यस्थास्तेनशक्याविशन्तोदेहंद्रष्टुंमानुषैर्विश्वरूपाः।।
आप्तंवाक्यंतत्समीक्ष्याभिधास्येलिङ्गान्येषांयानिदेहेभवन्ति।।७।।
Due to their great wealth i.e. divinity, human beings cannot see the entry of grahas into the body. The words of aptas (learned men / scholars, sages – who speak only truth always and have special knowledge about everything) will help us to understand the signs of their entry (by the description given by the aptas in the treatises).

शूनाक्षःक्षतजसगन्धिकःस्तनद्विड्वक्रास्योहतचलितैकपक्ष्मनेत्रः।।
उद्विग्नःसुलुलितचक्षुरल्परोदीस्कन्दातोंभवतिचगाढमुष्टिवर्चाः ||८||
Signs and symptoms found in the child seized by Skanda Graha –
– Swelling of eyes,
– Smells like blood,
– Aversion to the breast (breast feeding),
– Irregular / distorted face, eyelids and eye of any one side of the face, with either loss of movements or more movements,
– Agitation (irritable),
– Eyes are closed,
– Child cries very little,
– Child holds its fists tightly and has
– Hard faeces

निःसंज्ञोभवतिपुनर्भवेत्ससंज्ञःसंरब्धःकरचरणैश्चनृत्यतीव।।
विण्मूत्रेसृजतिविनद्यजृम्भमाणःफेनंचप्रसृजतितत्सखाभिपन्नः।।९।।
Signs and Symptoms found in children seized by Skandapasmara (friend of Skanda) Graha –
– Loss of consciousness and regain of consciousness again,
– Irritability,
– Dance like movements of arms and legs,
– Child cries while eliminating feces and passing urine,
– Excessive yawning,
– Froth is eliminated from the mouth
Sakunigrahajusta sisu laksana – features of child seized by sakuni graha
स्त्रस्ताङ्गोभयचकितोविहङ्गगन्धिःसंत्राविव्रणपरिपीडितःसमन्तात्।।
स्फोटैश्चप्रचिततनुःसदाहपाकैर्विज्ञेयोभवतिशिशुःक्षतःशकुन्या।।१०।।
Signs and symptoms found in children seized by Sakuni Graha –
– Child has debilitated arms, legs and other parts of the body,
– Fear struck,
– Smells like bird,
– Troubled by many ulcers exuding pus, blood etc.,
– Body studded with eruptions (blebs, vesicles),
– Burning sensation and
– Formation of pus

रक्तास्योहरितमलोऽतिपाण्डुदेहःश्यावोवाज्वरमुखपाकवेदनार्तः।।
रेवत्याव्यथिततनुश्चकर्णनासंमृगातिध्रुवमभिपीडितःकुमारः।।११।।

– Child has reddish face,
– Green colored feces,
– Body is either yellowish, white or blue in color,
– Fever,
– Ulcers of mouth,
– Severe suffering,
– Rubbing of ears and nose often

स्वस्ताङ्गःस्वपितिसुखंदिवानरात्रौविड्भिन्नंसृजतिचकाकतुल्यगन्धिः।।

– A weak body,
– Child does not sleep well during day or night,
– Voids loose feces,
– Body smells like that of a crow,
– Vomiting,
– Frequent horripilations
– Profound thirst always
Andhaputanagrahajusta sisu laksana – features of child seized by andhaputana graha
यो द्वेष्टि स्तनमतिसारकासहिक्काच्छर्दीभिर्ज्वरसहिताभिरर्द्यमानः |
दुर्वर्णः सततमधःशयोऽम्लगन्धिस्तं ब्रूयुर्भिषज इहान्धपूतनार्तम् ||१३||
Signs and symptoms occurring in child seized by Andhaputana Graha –
– Aversion to the breast (breast milk),
– Diarrhoea,
– Hiccup,
– Vomiting,
– Fever,
– Bad or abnormal color of the body,
– Lies (sleeps) with face down and
– Emits sour smell
Sitaputanagrahajusta sisu laksana – features of child seized by sitaputana graha
उद्विग्योभृशमतिवेपतेप्ररुद्यात्संलीनःस्वपितिचयस्यचान्त्रकूजः।।
विस्त्राङ्गोभृशमतिसार्यतेचयस्तंजानीयाद्भिवगिहशीतपूतनार्तम्।।१४।।
Signs and Symptoms found in child seized by Sitaputana Graha –
– Child is highly restless / irritable,
– More shivers,
– Cries greatly,
– While sleeping, huddles inside of the bed,
– Has gurgling noise in the intestine,
– Foul smell emitted from the body of the child,
– Severe diarrhea
Mukhamandikagrahajusta sisu laksana – features of child seized by mukhamandika graha
म्लानाङ्गःसुरुचिरपाणिपादवकोबहाशीकलुषसिरावृतोदरोयः।।
सोद्वेगोभवतिचमूत्रतुल्यगन्धिःसज्ञेयःशिशुरिहवक्रमण्डिकार्तः।।१५।।
Signs and Symptoms of child seized by Mukhamandika Graha –
– Withering (fade, weak) of body parts,
– Hands, feet and face appear brilliant,
– Child eats more food,
– Ugly network of veins are visible on the abdomen,
– Child is irritable,
– Body of the child emits smell of urine
Naigamesagrahajusta sisu laksana – features of child seized by naigamesa
यःफेनंवमतिविनम्यतेचमध्येसोद्वेगंविलपतिचोर्ध्वमीक्षमाणः।।
ज्वर्यंतप्रततमथोवसासगन्धिर्निःसंज्ञोभवतिहिनैगमेषजुष्टः।।१६।।
SIgns and Symptoms found in a child seized by Naigamesa Graha –
– Frothy vomiting,
– Child stretches its body often,
– Child often cries with restlessness,
– Child has upward gaze,
– Continuous fever,
– Smell of muscle fat emitted from the body of the child and
– The child is unconsciousness
प्रस्तब्धोयःस्तनद्वेषीमुह्यतेचाविशन्मुहुः।।
तंबालमचिराद्धन्तिग्रहःसंपूर्णलक्षणः।।१७।।
विपरीतमतःसाध्यंचिकित्सेदचिरार्दितम्।।
Graha exhibiting the below mentioned features will kill the child soon –
– Rigidity of the body,
– Aversion to breast,
– Unconsciousness often
If the graha has opposite features and if the seizure is of recent origin, it is curable and hence should be treated.
Samanya cikitsa – general treatment
गृहेपुराणहविषाऽभ्यज्यबालंशुचौशुचिः।।१८।।
सर्षपान्प्रकिरेत्तेषांतैलैदर्दीपंचकारयेत्।।
सदासन्निहितंचापिजुहुयाद्धव्यवाहनम्।।१९।।
सर्वगन्धौषधीबीजैर्गन्धमाल्यैरलङ्कृतम्।।
अग्नयेकृत्तिकाभ्यश्चस्वाहास्वाहेतिसंततम्।।२०।।
नमःस्कन्दायदेवायग्रहाधिपतयेनमः।।
शिरसात्वाऽभिवन्देऽहंप्रतिगृह्णीष्वमेबलिम्।।
नीरुजोनिर्विकारश्चशिशुजायतांद्रुतम्।।२१।।
The child should be given abhyanga – anointing / massage with old ghee.
The child should be kept in a clean place and covered with clean cloth.
Mustard should be spread all around the child.
A lamp should be lit using mustard oil and kept near the child.
A fire altar should be made. Fire God and Krttika should be worshipped by offering oblations of Sarvagandha i.e. fragrant substances (like camphor, cardamom etc), adorned with garlands prepared of seeds of plants like mustard, barley, rice etc. Worship should be accompanied by uttering of ‘Svaha’ all the time.
Prayer – ‘I bow my head to you O God, the chief of Grahas. Please accept the oblation offered by name. Please relieve this child from sufferings and abnormalities quickly’.
इतिश्रीसुश्रुतसंहितायामुत्तरतन्त्रान्तर्गतकुमारतन्त्रेनवग्रहाकृतिविज्ञानीयोनाम (प्रथमोऽध्यायः, आदितः) सप्तविंशोऽध्यायः।।२७।।
Thus ends the twenty seventh chapter by name Navagrahākṛti vijñānīya in Uttara Sthana of Suśruta Samhita.
