Sushruta Samhita Uttaratantra Chapter 36 Naigamesa Graha Pratişedha (Treatment of Naigamesa Graha)

        Acharya Sushruta has explained Naigamesha Graha and its treatment in Chapter 36 of Uttara Tantra.

        For Parisechana – decoction of bilva, agnimantha and putika or sura or sabija dhanyamla.

        For Taila – oil should be prepared with Priyangvadi Kashaya (Priyangu, Sarala, Ananta, Satapushpa and Kutannata) added with gomutra, dadhi mastu and amla kanjika.

        For Ghrta – ghee should be prepared with decoction of dwipanchamula, milk, Madhura (kakolyadi) gana and kharjuri mastaka. It shall be used for drinking / licking.

        For Dharana – amulets prepared from Vacha, Vayastha, Golomi and Jatila.

        For Utsadana – massage should be given with herbs mentioned in treatment of Skandapasmara Graha affliction.

        For Dhupana – fumication should be done with Siddharthadi churna / yoga – Siddhartha, Vacha, Hingu, Kustha, Aksata, Bhallataka and Ajamoda.

        For Dhupana – fumigation shall be given with excreta of monkey, owl and eagle, inside a new house, when people are sleeping.

        For Nivedana / Naivedya (offering) to Naigamesha – the father (protector) of Kumara (Lord Subramanya) should be given with rice, flowers and many types of eatables. Offering should be given below the Vata tree.

        Snana – the child should be bathed under a Vata tree.

        Bali – oblations should be offered under Nyagrodha tree on the sixth day of the fortnight.

        Description of Naigamesa Graha – has the head of the goat, unsteady eyes and eyebrows. He can take any desired form. He possesses great reputation and is considered as BALAPITA – father / protector of Bala i.e. Subramanya (children).

 

The 36th chapter of Uttaratantra of Sushruta Samhita is named as Naigamesa Graha Pratişedha Adhyaya. This chapter deals with the Treatment of Naigamesa Graha.  

अथातो मुखमण्डिकाप्रतिषेधं व्याख्यास्यामः ॥१॥
यथोवाच भगवान् धन्वन्तरिः ॥२॥

We will now expound Naigamesa pratisedha – treatment of the child seized by Naigamesa; as revealed by the venerable Dhanvantari.

Parisecana, Taila

बिल्वाग्रिमन्थपूतीकाः कार्याः स्युः परिषेचने ॥
सुरा सबीजं धान्याम्लं परिषेके च शस्यते ॥३॥
प्रियङ्गुसरलानन्ताशतपुष्पाकुटन्नटैः ॥
पचेत्तैलं सगोमूत्रैर्दधिमस्त्वम्लकाञ्जिकैः ॥४॥

Parisecana – The child afflicted by Naigamesa Graha should be bathed / showered with the below said –

        Decoction of Bilva, Agnimantha and Putika,

        Sura (beer),

        Sabija Dhanyamla – fermented gruel together with yeast

Taila – Oil should be prepared with decoction of Priyangu, Sarala, Ananta, Satapuspa and Kutannata, added with Go-mutra, Dadhi Mastu and Amla Kanjika – fermented rice-wash. This oil should be used for anointing the body of the child afflicted with Naigamesa Graha.

Ghrta, Dharana, Utsadana, Dhupana

पञ्जमूलद्वयक्काथे क्षीरे मधुरकेषु च ॥
पचेद्धृतं च मेधावी खर्जूरीमस्तकेऽपि वा ॥५॥
वचां वयःस्थां गोलोमीं जटिलां चापि धारयेत् ॥
उत्सादनं हितं चात्र स्कन्दापस्मारनाशनम् ॥६॥
सिद्धार्थकवचाहिङ्गुकुष्ठं चैवाक्षतेः सहः ॥
भल्लातकाजमोदाश्च हितमुद्धूपनं शिशो ः ॥७॥

Ghrta – An intelligent physician should prepare ghee with the decoction of the below mentioned herbs –

        Two Pancamula – Dasamula

        Milk

        Madhura Gana / Kakolyadi Gana group of herbs – their paste or

        Kharjuri Mastaka

This medicated ghee should be used for drinking / licking by the child.

Dharana – Amulets prepared of Vaca, Vayastha, Golomi and Jatila should be tied on the body of the child affected by Naigamesa Graha.

Utsadana – Massage to the child suffering from Naigamesa Graha should be given with herbs mentioned in the treatment of Skandapasmara Graha affliction.

Dhupana – Fumigation given with the below mentioned herbs is very much useful in treatment of Naigamesa Graha –

        Siddharta,

        Vaca,

        Hingu,

        Kustha,

        Aksata (Yava),

        Bhallataka and

        Ajamoda

Other measures

मर्कटोलूकगृध्राणं पुरीषाणि नवग्रहे ॥
धूपः सुप्ते जने कार्यो बालस्य  हितमिच्छता ॥८॥
तिलतण्डुलकं माल्यं भक्ष्यांश्च विविधानपि ॥
कुमारपितृमेषाय वृक्षमूले निवेदयेत् ॥९॥
अधस्ताद्वटवृक्षस्य स्नपनं  चोपदिश्यते ॥
बलिं न्यग्रोधवृक्षेषु तिथौ षष्ट्चां निवेदयेत् ॥१०॥
अजाननश्चलाक्षिभ्रॄः कामरूपी महायशाः ॥
बालं बालपिता देवो नैगमेषोऽभिरक्षतु ॥११॥

Dhupana – The physician desirous of providing health to the child afflicted with Naigamesa Graha should plan to give fumigation to the child. Fumigation should be given with the excreta of monkey, owl and eagle. It should be administered inside a new house and when people are sleeping.

Offering of tila – sesame, tandula – rice, flowers and many types of eatables should be given for Naigamesa – the father / protector of Kumara i.e. Lord Subramanya. They should be offered for the mentioned graha under the Vata tree.

The child should be bathed under a Vata tree. Oblations should be offered under Nyagrodha tree on the sixth day of the fortnight. Prayers towards Naigamesa Graha should be offered as – ‘God Naigamesa, you are having the head of the goat, unsteady eyes and eyebrows. You can take any form you wish to have. You possess great reputation and are father / protector of Bala i.e. Subramanya. Please protect the child.’

इति श्रीसुश्रृतसंहितायामुत्तरतन्त्रान्तर्गते कुमारतन्त्रे नैगमेषप्रतिषेधो नाम (दशमोऽध्यायः आदितः ) षट्त्रिंशोऽध्यायः ॥३६॥

Thus ends the thirty sixth chapter by name Naigamesapratisedha in Uttara Sthana of Susruta Samhita.
