Today I want to cover three common mistakes people make on the keto diet.

Common mistakes on keto and what to do:
1. Consuming too much fat
Eating more fat doesn’t get you deeper into ketosis—lowering your carbs does.
• Don’t consume extra fat unless you’re new to keto and need help fasting longer.
• Eat the fat that normally comes with the protein you eat.

2. Consuming keto snacks
Insulin is not just increased by carbs. It’s increased by eating.
• Avoid snacks, even keto snacks.

3. Consuming hidden carbs
Be sure to look for hidden carbs, especially maltodextrin, in your food and supplements. Fruit and berries contain fructose and glucose, which can also cause problems.
• Check your food labels
• Avoid fruit
• Avoid agave nectar
• Read the book “Don’t Eat for Winter.”

4. Not consuming enough quality protein
Not consuming enough protein tells the brain that you need to keep eating. Also, if you’re deficient in amino acids before going into a prolonged fast, you’re not going to feel very good.
• Consume a moderate amount of quality bioavailable protein
• Take a blend of complete amino acids (if you don’t feel good while fasting)

  1. I made a carnivore lasagna the other day with chicken for the pasta. I made AA white sauce with Cauliflower and Alfredo added a little bacon. added spinach in the ricotta. Also added bits of carrots and broccoli so colorful and healthy. I was so upset I gained two pounds. I did noticed that the full fat ricotta tasted very sweet when I was making it. I added extra pink salt. Could there be hidden sugar in this? I'm Italian so I refused to use cottage cheese to lasagna. I did noticed thought it said 5 grams of carbs all of a sudden. Since when? Full fat cheese is usually only 1 at the most. I guess I will have to use cottage cheese from now on.

  2. Lower your carbs is the most important. Insulin prevents the burning of fat and loss of proteins. You could have too much fat in your system and eating more fat will make it worse. I was on my third night of no sugar and I couldn't sleep a wink! Is that usual? I haven't had any "keto" snacks. I've had very little fruit. I haven't been hungry. I don't know what happened. It's weird.

  3. Yes snacks are an addiction. If I don't have some keto snacks on hand then the really high sugar snacks are used. Having an alternative snack keeps from binging. Gradually removing snacks is a goal.

  4. Thank you so much dr Berg.
Imagine, when I talked to my primary physician regarding the reason I looked slimmer, my face, my body, after a month of doing the ketogenic lifestyle ,she immediately said, I was going to get keto acidosis, and that I should quit the diet. As you can imagine, I lost my trust in her as my main doctor.

  5. I'm a bit confused as it almost sounds like your saying two different things! Are you saying to continue to eat lets say two TBSP's of peanut butter or half an avocado as a healthy fat serving in a meal while getting used to the fasting only? Or are you saying once you've gotten through the first part (getting used to the fasting) to stop the servings of good fat completely? I've watched a bunch of you vids & I never got the idea from your videos to "load up on fat" I just thought you were recommending as a healthy serving of good fat.

  6. Been on Carnivore for a couple months now, changed my life and my body is absolutely thriving. My first 30 days I felt so good, decided to try it again. Went Carnivore for two week to get into ketosis, once that happened I did a 5+ day water fast, has zero food or calories, only water with electrolytes, small amounts of black coffee and plain green tea. Lost another 7 lbs doing that, the fast was easy with the power of ketones. I am still Carnivore and going to use it as a tool until I hit my goal weight, then go back to Animal Based. I crave honey and fresh fruit and I think its more sustainable for me for the long haul. My inflammation stays away on Animal Based, but Ketosis obviously goes away. It's worth it to me.

  7. After falling off keto on a holiday to Bali last year, I had trouble getting back on until nearly two months ago. When I started back on keto, low carb, I was not getting any results, and especially because I also retired in December. I looked at everything I was eating and yes, I was definitely over eating keto stuff, especially treats like my hemp bars and fat bombs. So using my Fat Secret app, I tracked absolutely every mouthful I ate and whoa! My carbs were still too high, my calories too high, so after making some adjustments, I’m back on track and I’m 800g away from my goal weight 😊😊😊

  10. This video is a great reminder to focus on whole foods and listen to your body's signals, rather than just chasing macros. It's easy to get lost in the "keto-fied" versions of everything, but real, unprocessed food is where the real success lies. Thanks for keeping it real!
