Firstly, I will answer a common question: Should I become a nutritionist or a dietitian?

I recommend becoming a dietitian if you have the opportunity. All dietitians are also nutritionists, but not all nutritionists can call themselves dietitians.

Although becoming a dietitian is harder, it’s worth it because it opens up many more career opportunities and potentially higher earnings. A dietitian’s qualification is highly respected, whereas “nutritionist” can be a less specific title.

There are a few different routes to becoming a dietitian, but at a basic level, what you need is:
A specific university degree
A period of practical training
In some countries, you must also pass a national licensing exam (United States and Canada). This is not needed in Ireland or the UK.
After completing the above, you can apply to your country’s professional regulatory board. Once they have reviewed and accepted your application, you can begin practising and using the title Dietitian.

In the UNITED STATES: Effective January 1, 2024, a minimum of a master’s degree will be required to be eligible for the RDN exam. So you will HAVE TO HAVE a Master’s degree; just having an undergraduate degree will not be enough.

How To Become A Dietitian in Ireland in the UK, Canada and the United States – Step by Step
Step 1: Obtain a Degree In Dietetics
There are two types of programmes available to qualify as a dietitian:

Full-time undergraduate BSc (Hons) programme: these are usually four years in length.
Full-time postgraduate programme or masters programme: these are typically two years in length and can lead to a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) in dietetics or a Masters (MSc) qualification in dietetics.
Option A: Undergraduate or Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics:
This is usually done straight after secondary school or high school. This would be after your leaving cert in Ireland, your GCSE’s in the UK, and high school in the United States or Canada.

  1. I'm excited about my educational journey! I have a master's degree in health education and a bachelor's in criminal justice. I'm currently pursuing a second bachelor's in nutrition science, which includes an internship in a Dietetic Internship (DI). I'm looking forward to qualifying to sit for the exam and seeing where this path will take me!

  2. The masters rdn program I want to get into requires 11 prerequisites classes and 13 courses plus coordinated 15 months of internship. Is that too vigorous of a program?

Also, the thesis requires you to record all the data of a patient and write a paper 20 pages long and present in front of class. Is this common?

  3. Hello! I have some questions, hopefully get your reply! Thank you so much!
I am living in the UK with t2 visa, I did my undergrad in a different country and master in the UK, both in a far different field from Nutrition. I have been taking free courses in Nutrition, and I have found my passion for it.
Could you please let me know if there were any chance for me to be a Dietitian in the UK while not having the UK passport?
Could I take a post-grad degree in Dietitian without taking 4 years undergrad degree? Or any route you could suggest me to follow?

I appreciate your time and your help so much! Thank you!

  4. Hi Maria, this is Pema from Bhutan.
I am a registered dietician (with bachelors in Nutrition and Dietetics from India ) in Bhutan with over a decade of field experience in various hospitals in my country. Now I want to work in NHS as registered dietician, what are my processes ahead. Please help. Any conversion exams or can I can get a job directly?

  5. Hiya! Love the video, I found it very insightful, especially since I am looking to go back to education and get qualified as an RD.

As a mature student who will need to do an 'Access to HE: Science' course, what are the chances of any dietitians allowing me to shadow/volunteer with them during that course? Or is it more likely they would want me to have some Dietetic/Nutrition based education first? 🙂

And if you have any advice for someone looking to qualify later in life I'd be happy to hear it <3

  6. Hii Maria! This is Vimala .. I passed out in 2013 with Masters in Food Science and Nutrition from India.I have 10 years of experience as Dietitian in Different countries. Now i am working in Qatar as Clinical Dietetic Coordinator. At current i am processing CORU recognition.I have submitted all the verification forms to CORU..Do you know how long does CORU takes to recognise my application? And after CORU recognition, what is the probability of acquiring a Dietitian job in Ireland public sector? Can you please guide me through Sister?

  7. Hi, is chemistry really required to study dietetics? I’m about to choose my leaving cert subjects and I know I won’t be able to score high enough in order to get into the undergraduate course in Ireland. If I don’t do chemistry, is all I’m left with is the path of doing nutritional science and then a masters in dietetics? Thank you !
